  2. Dear ccL1,

    Thanks for the kind praise.

I will indeed do a write up on the January 12 legislative elections ASAP.

I have a lot I want to get off my chest.

It may be a few days before I can get to it however.

I'm helping the New Party out as a campaign worker.

  3. Hi Bevin, I am disappointed that the New Party did not get any seats, despite being the 3rd party...And why is the KMT nominating that Wang Jin-pyng again as speaker? He is just a green guy in disguise...I am not convinced that the KMT's win will result in better Cross-Straits relations, or faster reunification either...although anything is better than the DPP, I have no high hopes.

  4. Dear Zyzyx,

    Yes. I am too.

Let me give you the short answer to why the New Party didn't do as well as it should have.

The short reason is that Pan Blue voters who would have voted for the New Party if they understood how the new Single Member District, Two Ballot System worked, didn't understand how it worked.

Pan Blue voters are right to be afraid of "Pan Blue disunity." The Pan Blues have lost many times in the past because their majority was split, allowing the Pan Greens to squeak in even though they were the minority, and have always been the minority.

This time however, the KMT lied to the public about how the Single Member District, Two Ballot System works. The KMT ran millions of dollars in prime time TV spots misleading Pan Blue voters into thinking that if they voted for the New Party on the At Large Party Ballot, then the DPP would win.

If you understand how the Single Member District, Two Ballot System works, you know this is a bare-faced lie. You know that the second ballot, the At Large Party Ballot does not affect the first ballot, the District Ballot.

The whole purpose of the second ballot, the At Large Party Ballot, is to allow voters to vote for the party whose ideals most represent their own values, without undermining the election prospects for an acceptable, albeit not ideal candidate on the District Ballot.

This was the first time the new Single Member District, Two Ballot System was used.

During the campaign, we New Party campaign workers found that nobody understood how the system worked!

They believed erroneously that any vote for their first choice on the At Large Party Ballot would "split the Pan Blue vote" and lead to a Pan Green squeaking in.

The KMT encouraged this lack of understanding by running millions of dollars in TV spots scaring Pan Blue voters into not voting for the New Party.

As a result, the Pan Blues did not do as well as they could have. Had the KMT not attempted to squash the New Party, the Pan Blues together could have eliminated one more Pan Green candidate, Trong Chai.

That's right, the notorious Trong Chai, aka "Referendum Chai," Deep Green hardliner.
